The hum of air conditioning units running on high started Thursday evening, setting the rhythm for a weekend where four generations collided in the best possible way. My dad's side of the family planned a long-weekend camping together at Sterling State Park on the shores of Lake Erie. Our gathering brought together four generations, ranging from our newest addition, 9-week-old baby Ella Mae, all the way to my 95-year-old Aunt Lucy, the proud matriarch of our family. Full disclosure: Aunt Lucy skipped the overnight camping, but she made it out to enjoy a good meal and catch up with everyone on Saturday.
Living in a Sauna: Let’s be honest about the weather: the humidity was absolute, thick, and almost miserable. Step outside your camper for two minutes, and you were wearing a layer of damp air. Nobody cared about messy hair or sticky sunscreen.
The Great Equalizers Survival required staying still—or staying submerged.
Lake Erie: To escape the muggy heat, we cooled off in Lake Erie's surprisingly clear, algae-free 72-degree water while the littles had a blast surfing the gentle waves.
On Two Wheels and Four Paws: The campsite loops were a constant parade. Kids zoomed past on bikes, followed closely by a rotating shift of family dogs out for their fifth walk of the day.
Shaded Slowdowns: Thankfully, on most days, we had a gentle lake breeze that carried right through the numerous pop-up canopies we set up between campsites. It became the ultimate haven to catch up with a cousin or two, nap, or just be.
Feasting and Hanging Out: Saturday night’s potluck truly proved this family can cook. From BBQ pulled pork and juicy corn on the cob to an endless array of dips, salads and fabulous desserts, if you went away hungry, it was entirely your own fault.
At the end of the day, family is the anchor that grounds us through every season of life, offering a sense of belonging that time and distance can’t erase. Gathering four generations around a shared table—or a campfire—is a powerful reminder of where we come from and the legacy we are building together. Though we deeply feel the missing presence of those who are no longer with us, these reunions keep their spirit alive as we stitch new memories into our family's ongoing story. It’s about holding space for one another, passing down traditions, and celebrating our deep roots. In a fast-moving world, pausing to laugh, reconnect, and simply sit together is the greatest gift of all.
